LA Agritecture Workshop Designs Urban Spaces to Grow Food

LOS ANGELES, Ca. (March. 24, 2017) — Teams of local architects, engineers, developers, Los Angeles city officials, urban farmers, and others will compete next week to design and devise the best plan for sustainably growing food in urban environments. Sponsored at the gold level by the LA office of global architecture and design firm Perkins+Will, and co-organized by Agritecture.com, an online media outlet focused on urban and vertical farming; the sold-out “Agritecture Design Workshop” will give participants the opportunity to produce creative, yet practical, solutions for supporting urban agriculture in the LA metropolitan area. The winning team will be selected based on how well their urban farm concept localizes food production within the city while decreasing resource consumption and increasing social cohesion.
The event will take place in two locations. The friday March 31st portion will be at the LA Cleantech Incubator (LACI). LACI is dedicated to building a cleantech economy for LA and uses state of the art programming to connect its constituents.
The April 1 workshop will be held at the LA office of Perkins+Will, located downtown. Known worldwide for its commitment to sustainable design, health, and wellness, some of the firm’s current local projects include the interior design of the new LA Lakers Headquarters and Training Facility (in conjunction with Rossetti); and the LEED Platinum Certified, LAPD Metropolitan Division Facility. Notable global projects include the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.; and the VanDusen Botanical Garden’s new Visitor Centre in Vancouver, a LEED Platinum, Living Building Challenge Petal Certified project, exploring the connection between humans and nature.
The Agritecture Design Workshop is unique in that interdisciplinary groups develop design concepts specifically for a site. In this case, the site will be along the LA River. RiverLA will contribute relevant information on the workshop design site. RiverLA is a nonprofit whose mission is to ensure the 51-mile Los Angeles River integrates design and infrastructure to bring people, water and nature together. RiverLA’s offices are based at the LACI campus where the Friday portion of the event will be hosted.
Participation in the LA workshop is sold out. However, tickets are still available for a presentation, keynote, and networking session to be held on the evening of April 1st from 4 to 7 pm at the office of Perkins+Will. Delivering the keynote will be Colin Archipley. Colin, along with his wife Karen, are the founders of Archi’s Acres; a first of it’s kind farm, utilizing hydro-organic production techniques and being certified organic since 2006. Colin and Karen also created Archi’s Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (AiSA) in partnership with Cal Poly Pomona. AiSA has trained transitioning military as well as civilians in sustainable organic agriculture and entrepreneurship since 2007. To date over 450 students have come through AISA, which was formerly known as VSAT (Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training.)
In addition to the workshop, $1,700 worth of equipment will be donated by Agritecture & various community partners to install a vertical farm unit, known as the +Farm at Edwin Markham Middle School in Watts. Community Healing Gardens (CHG), a group that already maintains a one-acre garden at Edwin Markham, will maintain the 2’ by 4’ by 6’ vertical farm system and organic seedlings will be donated by LA Urban Farms. Additionally, CHG will work their new indoor farm into the curriculum for the students.
The Agritecture Design Workshop concept first debuted in New York City in December 2014. The LA Agritecture Workshop will be the 8th such workshop in an 8th different city.
