NV Indoor Ag Conference Assembles Innovators to Confront Challenges to Local Food Production

(PRWEB) April 08, 2013 – Entrepreneurs, agriculture industry leaders and Nevada state officials plan to come together to propel forward the development of creative and sustainable indoor growing solutions. The Nevada Indoor Agriculture Conference, which will take place on Wednesday, April 24 at the Historic 5th Street School in Downtown Las Vegas, will explore solutions to increase local food production in the dry desert landscape that abounds in Nevada and, in turn, bolster the state’s internal food supply as well as the local economy. Indoor agriculture has the potential to meet future food demands, reduce environmental impacts, and create new economic engines.

To address these challenges, a Who’s Who of investors, farmers, industry leaders and entrepreneurs, who already are proving that indoor agriculture can help conserve precious water resources, negate the need for pesticides, enable local chefs and retailers to obtain fresher food faster and strengthen local food systems, will bring their leading-edge products and ideas to the conference.

Confirmed speakers include:

Paul Selina, vice president of applied research for Village Farms, one of the largest growers and marketers of hydroponic greenhouse production in North America

David J. Foster, business programs specialist at United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Foster administers Business Programs for USDA-Rural Development in Southern Nevada.

Paul Hardej, co-founder of Chicago-based aeroponic and aquaponic company, FarmedHere, which recently opened the world’s largest commercial vertical farm.

David Bell, chief marketing officer of Houweling’s Tomatoes, a family owned, world-renowned greenhouse tomato grower with facilities in Camarillo, CA and Delta, BC that is constantly innovating to reduce its environmental footprint.

Zack Porter, operating partner at Pegasus Capital Advisors, is a successful entrepreneur with deep ties to Silicon Valley venture firms. Porter focuses on developing investment opportunities in companies that offer solutions to food scarcity, food security and improved nutrition.

Other innovative businesses that will be represented at the conference include Go Green Agriculture, a hydroponic family farm operation that plans to set up a network of small farms across the country that utilize information system technology to improve efficiency and sustainability, Whole Foods Market, CropKing and Hydro Greens, a Nevada-based 30,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse operation growing herbs, lettuces and assorted micro greens.

“We have an impressive array of speakers lined up for the conference, and we know they will bring a wealth of information to the attendees,” said Seedstock co-founder Robert Puro.
